On July 27, 2024, the sprawling estate of Karen and Gordon Floyd in Spartanburg, SC provided a stunning backdrop for The Miracle Story luncheon, an event that united influential and compassionate individuals in a cause that transcended borders. Co-hosted by Liliya and Senator Josh Kimbrell, Nadia and Ark Tofan, and Olga and Ruslan Antonov, the luncheon was more than just a gathering—it was a testament to the power of unity and the relentless pursuit of hope.
The Miracle Story began when Karen Floyd, Publisher of ELYSIAN Magazine and Executive Producer of the documentary Ukraine: For the Children, met Sasha, a Ukrainian soldier, during her time filming in Ukraine. Sasha’s courage and resilience left an indelible mark on Floyd, sparking a bond that would carry across continents. Sasha, who had been severely injured while defending his homeland, arrived in the United States for rehabilitation. Floyd, moved by his story and the challenges he faced, resolved to do everything within her power to support him. Hosting a fundraiser to raise money for Sasha’s urgently needed prosthetics became a mission close to her heart.
The fundraiser was set against the tranquil beauty of the Floyd estate, which is nestled on six picturesque acres flanked by water on either side. Guests were greeted with warmth and invited to meet Sasha, whose presence was a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s capacity to endure and overcome. The atmosphere was both somber and uplifting, as attendees recognized the gravity of Sasha’s situation while also feeling the hope that their contributions could bring.
At the fundraising luncheon, guests delighted in a hearty spread of authentic Ukrainian cuisine. The dishes were all crafted with traditional recipes that celebrated the vibrant flavors of Ukraine. The authentic dishes provided guests with not just a taste of Ukraine, but also a deeper connection to the cause they were supporting. As they dined, Floyd took the opportunity to introduce Sasha and share the story behind the documentary. She spoke of the miracles she witnessed amid the harrowing challenges of creating Ukraine: For the Children—miracles that underscored the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the power of international solidarity.
The Miracle Story luncheon was the first of two planned fundraising events, and it exceeded expectations. By the end of the day, over half of the necessary funds had been raised for Sasha’s prosthetics from the Protez Foundation. The event was more than just a fundraiser; it was a day that illuminated some of the world’s real problems while making each guest feel like a part of something special—something that could bring about change and peace.
As guests departed, they carried with them not just memories of a beautiful Saturday, but a renewed sense of purpose. The Miracle Story luncheon was a reminder that even in the face of immense challenges, the collective efforts of compassionate individuals can create ripples of change that reach far beyond the borders of any one nation.
